BRB, Moving To This Place In England Where Misogyny Is A Hate Crime

Excuse me while I pack my things and move to Nottinghamshire, a county in England that just classified misogyny as a hate crime. Thanks to the county’s local police force and women’s center, pretty much any sexist act in Nottinghamshire will now warrant a police investigation-meaning this county is about to become a pretty excellent place for women to live.

“What women face, often on a daily basis, is absolutely unacceptable and can be extremely distressing,” Nottinghamshire Chief Constable Sue Fish told the BBC. “Nottinghamshire Police is committed to taking misogynistic hate crime seriously and encourages anyone who is affected by it to contact us without hesitation.” The force’s definition of misogyny is pretty straightforward: “incidents against women that are motivated by an attitude of a man toward a woman and include behavior targeted toward a woman by men simply because they are a woman.” That’s a little wordy, but it basically means that sexism-in all its many forms-is a crime. Period. This is especially excellent in cases of cat-calling (ugh) and casual workplace sexism (double ugh), because these previously legal activities are now lumped in to the category of criminal activity. Meaning that asshole who whistles at you every morning needs to think twice before doling out another cat-call. That’s criminal now, sucker.

“We’re pleased to see Nottinghamshire Police recognize the breadth of violence and intimidation that women experience on a daily basis in our communities,” Melanie Jeffs, the manager at Nottingham Women’s Centre said. “Recording this as a hate crime will give us a detailed picture of how often, when and where it is happening. It has been very difficult to build that picture before but we will now get detailed data to analyze.” Not to mention, Jeffs said, “Showing that the police take it seriously will also give people the confidence to come forward and report offenses.”

Incredible. Seriously, incredible. Well done, Nottinghamshire. Don’t be surprised if you see an influx of women moving to your communities sometime in the near future. (I’ll probably be one of them.)
