Summertime is great for so many reasons. You’ve got tons of rosé, so much barbecue (with lots of healthy options!), and frozen treats abound. Of course, as much as we love ice cream and the like, if you’re trying to lose or watch your weight, dabbling in the world of icy desserts can be a dangerous game. Seemingly healthy options like fruity popsicles may actually be packing a lot of sugar, and certain ice cream brands that seem unhealthy could be healthier than you think.
If you’re on a weight loss plan, but still want to cool down with a bowl of ice cream, registered dietitians say these are the eight healthy treats you’ll want to shop for the next time you’re at the grocery store. Some are better for you than others, but when it comes to these treats it’s best to think of them as once-in-a-while indulgences rather than every day necessities. “In every healthy diet, a little ice cream is great,” says Abby Langer, R.D. Definitely treat yo-self, but just be sure to keep an eye on portion control.

Edwina Clark, M.S., R.D., a certified sports dietitian, and head of nutrition and wellness at Yummly, is a fan of these treats because they have fewer added sugars than most dairy-based frozen desserts, they’re low in calories (about 80 to 150 depending on the bar), and each bar has about four to five grams of protein. Plus, “The individual packaging makes overindulgence less likely than if you were scooping from a pint,” she explains. You can find these in a variety of flavors from blueberry to sea salt caramel.

Mochi is a sweet, gummy Japanese rice cake that has a chewy texture. You’ve probably seen it as a topping at your local froyo shop. It’s also great filled with ice cream. Again, Clark likes these bites for the portion control aspect. Each one is just 100 calories and she says they “provide just the right amount of sweet without overdoing it.” Flavors include black sesame, green tea, plum wine, and more.
