Good Morning America meteorologist Ginger Zee is one of three top contestants on Dancing With The Stars this season, but a pelvic injury almost derailed her chance to dance Monday night in the show’s performance finale. The 35-year-old got hurt last week while rehearsing a contemporary routine with her professional dance partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, and the injury caused painful back spasms.
“I went to see a physical therapist for the show, Gina [Minchella], and she said my pelvis was forward and an inch off,” she told ABC News. “I came back the next day, and [my pelvis] was backward and an inch the other way. My pelvis was just moving all over.” Ouch! Last December, Zee and her husband, Ben Aaron, welcomed their first child. “My pelvis is very loose and unstable,” Zee shared with ABC. “Because I just had a baby.”
She spent the next few days taking it easy, and had to stop dancing altogether last Thursday. “On Thursday there was definitely a point where the physical therapist said, ‘Stop. You can’t dance anymore right now,’” Zee told People. Even more distressing was the therapist’s orders not to hold her baby son, Adrian Benjamin. “The therapist said I shouldn’t hold him on either side. It was awful,” she revealed. In the hours leading up to her Monday night performance, Zee wasn’t sure whether she’d be physically fit to take the stage. She ultimately did get to dance, and she powered through those moves like a champ. She and Chmerkovskiy even received a perfect score on their second dance of the night. What a boss!
“Back spasms are unfortunately a challenge we had to face, but we don’t want to make any excuses,” Chmerkovskiy told E! News. “This is our last week, and we have to give it all we’ve got.” Tonight on the DWTS finale, fans will finally learn the competition’s winner-and it very well could be Zee! Watch her slay through the moves below.
