Spoiler alert: Last night on Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke‘s character Daenerys Targaryen, AKA the Mother of Dragons, turned the tables on her Dothraki captors by burning down the house where she was held captive. Magically, she proved she’s completely fireproof in the process. As the Dothraki burned to a crisp, she walked naked through the flames, completely untouched. It was epic. And Emilia Clarke wants people to know that, yes, that was her going au naturel in the crazy scene.
The actress told Entertainment Weekly that she was confident in shedding her clothes for the plot twist.
“I’d like to remind people the last time I took my clothes off was season 3,” she told the mag. “That was a while ago. It’s now season 6. But this is all me, all proud, all strong. I’m just feeling genuinely happy I said ‘Yes.’ That ain’t no body double!”
While we love Clarke’s confidence to go nude, we totally support women opting for a body double, too. It’s an actor’s choice, and a personal one at that. Clarke’s co-star Lena Headey unrightfully found herself under fire when she used a body double in the show last season, and it’s beyond ridiculous that people gave her hate for not going nude.
EW reports that Clarke’s nude scene was filmed on a private, closed set and then cut together using special effects with the rest of the scene. Clarke says this helped her feel in control.
“Taking off my clothes is not the easiest thing, but with the magic of the effects, I don’t have to do a season 1 and go on a cliff and do it,” she told the mag.
Last year, Clarke defended her stance on nude scenes on Instagram, after the Daily Mail misreported that she was against doing sex scenes in the show.
“In drama, if a nude scene forwards a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters, I’m perfectly fine with it,” she wrote. “Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. In either case, like a good Mother of Dragons, I’m always in control.”
Slay on, Mother of Dragons.
