8 Times Ryan Reynolds Totally Earned The Title Of “Sexiest Dad”

People has named Ryan Reynolds the World’s Sexiest Dad, and we’re not about to disagree. Reynolds is a hot hubs to Blake Lively and father to their 13-month-old baby daughter James (who he adorably nicknamed “Shrimpie”), and every time he opens up about his family in public, the world falls in love with him a little more. With his fatherly instincts and perfect sense of humor (and, ahem, those great abs), what’s not to love? Let’s drop everything and gush over Reynolds’ sexiest dad moments.

1. When he called having a daughter a “dream come true.”

Reynolds grew up as the youngest of four boys, and his father was a cop. He told People that he was “less of a sibling and more of a moving target” as a kid, so when he found out his first child was a girl, he was thrilled. “Having a daughter was a dream come true for me. I would have made a terrible king.” Awww.

2. When he shared the first public photo of his little girl.

The Internet briefly lost its mind when Reynolds shared a tender image of him “thumb wrestling” with baby James shortly after her birth. Excuse me, just melting into a million tiny pieces over here.

Thumb wrestling isn’t always fair. Curiously, my hand is the small one.

3. When he defended his daughter’s name.

When a Good Morning Britain host called baby James’ name “unusual,” the jokester defended her with humor:

“In the spectrum of weird celebrity baby names, I feel like we’re not really breaking any new ground here. I mean, I didn’t call her Summer Squash Meadowlark, or something. I also thought of just going with all the letters being silent in her name, so it would just be ‘Haa.'”

James is named after her grandpa, Reynolds’ father, who passed away last October after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. When she was first born, Ryenolds avoided making an official announcement of her name in an effort to protect her privacy. He finally shared her name on the Today show last March after weeks of public speculation.

“It’s James. Everyone knows, and I told everyone who would listen before it was out there that I didn’t want to be the first guy screaming it out to the media because, as we know, little girls turn into teenage girls and little teenage girls sometimes scan through the archives and go, ‘Why did you do that?'”

4. When he learned from his (adorable) mistakes.

On Reynolds’ first Father’s Day, Lively took to Instagram to share an adorable shot of her man enjoying the great outdoors with their little one. The photo was precious, but fans were concerned about the fact that James hadn’t been strapped into her carrier the right way–she was being carried too low, and her hips weren’t positioned correctly. Once Reynolds found out that he was actually holding little James incorrectly, he responded by admitting his mistake. “The baby’s not properly secured in the vessel that I’m wearing there,” he told the Today show. “I’m a first-time dad, and that is not the first mistake I’ve made. I can guarantee you it won’t be last. I’d never used that particular carrier before. Every other time has been perfect.”

5. When he cut off an old friend to protect James’ privacy.

Reynolds and Lively have been extremely private about James’ life, especially when it comes to sharing pictures of her face. So when one of Reynolds discovered that one of his dearest friends was plotting to sell pictures of his daughter, he ended the friendship. “A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” he told GQ. “Somebody I’ve known, who’s been one of my closest friends, for 25 years. It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out…There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

6. When he worried about his Deadpool makeup terrifying his little girl.

The sight of Reynolds decked out in artificial scars for his role in Deadpool threw James for a loop. “My daughter would cry when she saw me in the scar makeup,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “It was hard. She would hear my voice, but she’d see this guy that looks like a fried testicle. That’s tough for a kid.”

7. When he gushed to the world about James’ first words.

“She’s saying ‘mama,'” Reynolds told Jimmy Fallon last September. “What my wife doesn’t realize is [the baby] calls me ‘Mama’ too. Seriously. I literally had to sit her down and tell her that penises don’t work that way. She understands…she gets it.” Clever, Ryan. Very clever.

8. When explained why he tries not to brag about parenthood.

When Reynolds talks about his baby, he makes it a point to keep things light. He told HuffPost Live:

“I just find it funny–everybody thinks their son or daughter is God’s gift to air, and in their home, they are. I mean, when I’m [in my house], I look at my daughter and I’m like, ‘You are the most amazing creature I’ve ever seen in my life. But that’s sort of annoying when you do that publicly, so I usually kind of go the other way with it. I’ll write silly jokes about how my daughter is terrible at her art or whatever.”
